This is the third generation of Planet Bike headlight to adorn my commuter rig, and a significant improvement over its two-year-old predecessor. There was little hesitation to put my money down when I saw the new model; Planet Bike is a great enthusiast-run company and my accessory provider of choice (their fenders are excellent, by the way.) When I bought the new Blaze, the installation was a snap: I removed the old light from the durable quick-release mounting it came with, and snapped the new light on. It took ten seconds. The light ships with a set of alkaline batteries inside. Industrial design does not get better than that.
My observations after several days of use indicate that illumination in the two steady-on modes is sufficient to spot dangerous irregularities in the road surface while moving at a brisk pace; naturally, I prefer the "high" mode, which noticeably outshines my powerful headlamp. The "Superflash" mode, as they call it, will get people's attention from a considerable distance, which is most important at intersections and especially in inclement weather. A big bonus of this mode is that the flash interval is short enough to still provide useful frontal illumination. I really like the Superflash function on this light; as "be seen" lights go, this model has few rivals, if any, at the present time. This really will boost your confidence among auto traffic because any motorist who can't see this beacon could not possibly pass the vision test at the DMV.
There are certainly more powerful bike lights than this one, including a new quick-release, Lithium-Ion-powered light I tested from another company that is slightly bigger than a Chapstick tube, possibly twice as powerful as the 2w Blaze, but also twice the cost. The Blaze is the pinnacle of AA-powered bike lights at the moment, representing a worthy compromise between the high-end lights and the low-budget, low-performance ones.
